How does bioenergy work?
Industries such as agriculture and forestry, municipalities, universities, food processors, hospitals, and medical centers generate billions of tons of waste.
Biomass is the organic by-product left over from plants, animals, and waste from organic sources such as garbage, wood, crops, landfill gas, and alcohol fuel. During combustion, the chemical energy of biomass is released as heat, converted into biofuels and biogases, and ultimately into usable energy such as fuel, electricity, and heat.
The primary process of biomass energy or bioenergy has to do with photosynthesis. Plants contain chlorophyll, which absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water from the soil. When animals eat plants, some of this energy is transferred. We call it renewable energy because carbon dioxide and water are released into the atmosphere and used to grow more plants and crops to restart the cycle.
Studies have proven that using biomass as an energy source has several advantages over using fossil fuels and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For it to be produced, organic material must go through a biomass conversion process, which has several routes.
As we all know, burning fossil fuels releases carbon from underground reservoirs that would have been trapped for millions of years if left alone. Switching from fossil fuels to energy from biomass, therefore, seemed like an obvious way to save nature and the planet in a sustainable way.
Various biomass feedstocks can be collected and used to produce a broad range of commodities including biofuels, chemicals, animal foods, energy generation products, and other consumer products through several conversion processes using a variety of technologies.
